As an aspiring writer, I have the utmost respect for those who are able to break into the industry and get thier work to the masses. I know some of the pitfalls and heartaches, and am learning more with each and every day that passes. Being a professional writer is the same as becoming a professional singer or actor. There are a million people wanting to break into the 'biz' and only the best will make it.
Actress/Model April Scott has written a book entitled 'Deal or No Deal: Behind the Briefcase' (ZaaGaa Productions, 2008, ISBN-13: 9780981535005). Apparently, this new "Tell All" book takes the reader from a small town in Missouri through Miss Scott's budding career in modeling to her final destination on Deal or No Deal. According to Target's description of the book:
"From the high heels to Howie Mandel -- absolutely nothing is off limits! April takes you through the auditioning process, the wardrobe fittings, and even inside the private hair, makeup, and dressing rooms. Learn the truth about the banker, the boob pads, the contracts, and the catfights!"
This is what bothers me most about such a book: why should I care? I work twelve hour shifts, lifting eight pound packages from machines onto pallets for a living. During one shift, standing on a concrete floor for most of the twelve hours, I'll lift between 25,000 and 30,000 pounds of cotton/polyester thread. When I'm done, my fingers hurt, my back hurts, my legs hurt and I'm exhausted. What's more, I make pennies to Miss Scott's dollars! Why would I care about her woes in high heels and fake boobs?
I'm not bashing the problems models and actors/actresses go through in order to make thier dreams come true. I've no doubt that they endure hardships I've never imagined. If this book is meant to be a biography of a woman's ordeal to fulfill her dreams, then I can see the allure, even if it's not my particular cup of tea. Apparently, this is not exactly that kind of book. This is centered around the dirt Miss Scott can dish on one of America's favorite TV shows. Count me out. I don't care that your shoes were too tight, you had to stuff your outfit and the air conditioning was turned up so that certain female attributes were more visible to the male members of the audience. Stand in my shoes for a week and tell me you wouldn't gladly suffer through all of that to get your paycheck over mine!
Tell All books are nothing more than gossip mags in a better wrapper. They do nothing to enlighten the reader to the plight of mankind, uplift the human spirit or inspire the reader to make a positive change in thier life. It doesn't even take the reader to a far off place where they can experience a life they'll never get to see in this world. It takes them instead, to the darkest, dirtiest parts of humanity, misconstrued and dramatized, and somehow makes them feel that they know something no one else does.
Congratulations, Miss Scott, on getting your work published. For your sake, I hope your book is a resounding success. For my sake...I hope you never publish another word. If this is what you feel the need to write about: keep it to yourself.
